The lyrics are romantic but also ascerbic, as the song's anti-hero realises that his love affair is ill-fated, or perhaps never really existed in the first place. Later in the song, he imagines a future as a wandering outcast ("shaving on the train") and wonder whether he will then be remembered by his current lover.
Musically, the song blends elements of folk-rock and classic 60s/70s soul, but in a manner that sounds more British than American. The "main" version has something of a "celtic soul" vibe, while the acoustic mix is softer, just lead and backing vocals, acoustic guitar, and piano. Vocals, guitar, drums and bass were recorded together in a single, unedited, take. There is also an instrumental version, with Daniel's clarinet taking the melody line.
